Behaviors
Behaviors refers to the actions that you want members to perform. Behaviors can be simple (buy a coffee) or more complex (buy a coffee and a scone, muffin or bagel during the morning hours at a new store in Boise).
Behaviors are powered by the SessionM rules engine, which evaluates member engagement and purchase-related events. For each campaign, you can model sophisticated combinations of member behaviors that the SessionM rules engine evaluates in real-time and then awards outcomes to members when they complete designated behaviors.
Behaviors are used in both promotional and messaging campaigns:
-
In messaging campaigns, behaviors are actions performed by member that trigger the delivery of messages.
-
In a promotional campaign, behaviors are actions performed by members that trigger the presentation of offers or awards and can trigger the delivery of messages.
Defining behaviors in the SessionM platform
This section briefly introduces how behaviors are represented in the SessionM platform to provide context for the discussion of the elements of a behavior that follow. See Define behaviors for procedural information about defining behaviors.
You define behaviors in the Campaigns module of the SessionM platform. You define the behaviors for a specific campaign on that campaign’s Setup page, shown below.
The Customer Behavior section list the existing behaviors for the campaign. Use the Add Behavior button to define new behaviors.
From here, you can define both rules and outcomes for the behavior.
Note that you can select from four types of events:
-
Campaign: This guide does not discuss the Opt in campaign event. Speak with your SessionM Customer Success representative about opt in strategies.
-
Engagement: Engagement events have been deprecated and are not discussed in this guide.
-
Purchase: Purchase events are the primary focus of this guide and are discussed in depth.
-
Custom: Custom events are discussed briefly in this guide. See About custom events for detailed information.
Components of a behavior
The components of a behavior are:
-
one or more rules (or groups of rules). Each rule has one or more events that specify the member actions and restrictions that qualify the events.
-
one or more outcomes, awarded to members when they complete the rules in the behavior.
